The Democratic Republic of the Congo has a 3-6-2-4 formal education structure. There are three years of pre-primary school, which has an official entry age of three and is referred to as maternelle. Primary school, which is known as enseignement primaire, has an official entry age of six and a duration of six grades. At the end of the cycle, students receive the certificat d`études primaires (CEP). Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary and upper secondary.
Lower secondary, which is known as premier cycle du secondaire (cycle d`orientation ou tronc commun), consists of grades 7-8; upper secondary, which is known as deuxième cycle du secondaire (général et normal, cycle long), consists of grades 9-12 and culminates in the diplôme d`état d`études secondaires du cycle long. In addition, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has multiple lower and upper secondary vocational education tracks (ISCED 2011 mapping for 2013 school year).
